Battle tested LCC adds another title!

EL CAJON — Apparently even a down year ends with a championship trophy for the La Costa Canyon boys lacrosse program.

The third-seeded Mavericks used stingy defense to beat No. 4 Bishop’s 5-2 in the section Division I final Saturday at Granite Hills High, extending their own record with a seventh section title and putting a rough regular season — by their lofty standards — behind them.

“Things didn’t really go how we wanted in the regular season,” coach Jesse Foss said of La Costa Canyon’s 11-9 record against an extremely tough schedule. “The kids had a chance to fold it up and pack it in, and they didn’t. They handled themselves like men.”
Jack Kagan and Jack McKeon each scored twice to lead La Costa Canyon (14-9) offensively.

But it was the Mavericks defense that played huge, with seven saves from senior goalkeeper Ben Fredricks, who came back strong this season after a freshman beat him out for a starting position last year.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way this team finished the season,” Fredricks said. “Everyone stepped up to finish strong.”
