La Costa Canyon (7-0) took on league opponent, San Dieguito Academy (2-7) on Tuesday night. The Mavericks used a balanced offense and a stifling defense to cruise to a 17-2 victory. The game had 9 different scorers find the net and saw six players score multiple goals. The game saw a great amount of balance with LCC scoring 8 goals in the first had and 9 in the second. The attack played outstanding in the second half with Johnny Gavin having a game high 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists), Dino Renna with a game high 4 goals on 5 shots, and Nick Vreeburg scoring a goal and assist. The defense was equally impressive by holding SDA to 6 shots on goal, causing 22 turn overs, and only allowing SDA to clear the ball 11 times out of 20 attempts. Cole Tudor had a great night on the defensive end. The junior defenseman was 6 of 9 on face offs, scooped up a season high 10 ground balls, and had 4 take aways. The game was a great team win and every one played hard until the final whistle. The Mavericks are back at home this Saturday against Columbine at 1pm. Columbine has started the season strong and are a top 4 team in Colorado. It should be a great game! I hope to see everyone out there supporting our Mavericks and Southern California lacrosse.

In another exciting game, the Mavericks (6-0) were able to finish off Foothill (4-4) in the extended period. LCC started the game off strong, scoring on 3 of 5 shots and holding a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Foothill battled back in the second quarter thanks to some costly offensive turnovers and some poor officiating. LCC held a 5-2 advantage at the half. The third quarter was mired by sloppy play in which neither team scored. In the fourth quarter, Foothill scored 4 goals including a rebound with 2 seconds left to tie the game. In overtime, the Mavericks won the face off, got control of the ball on offense, and called a timeout. Coming out of the time out, junior midfielder, Aaron Loy took the ball behind and scored an unassisted goal to end the game. The game was not the most impressive showing by the Mavericks but they showed a lot of heart in the overtime win. Aaron Loy had 2 goals in the game, scoring the games first and last goals. Senior midfielder, Dillon Flood contributed a game high 3 assists and junior attack man, Ben Keen had a team high 3 goals. On the defensive end, Aiden Moran and Kyle Mummau each had 4 caused turnovers. The Mavericks are back in action this Tuesday against San Dieguito Academy at LCC. The game time is at 730pm.

The Mavericks (5-0) were victorious at home on Tuesday night against Coronado (1-1). The game, which saw several lead changes, was closely contested all night. The game was tied at the half 2-2 and saw both teams trade goals throughout the game. The game was tied 4-4 with 5 minutes left when the Mavericks went man up. La Costa Canyon capitalized on the penalty and went up 5-4. On the next Maverick’s possession, John Hester scored off an assist from Brendan Gaughan for the game winning goal. Coronado did not go away and pulled within one goal with 2 minutes left. Another penalty by the Islanders saw LCC go man up to finish the game. The Mavericks fought hard all night but were plagued by turnovers and costly penalties which gave the Islanders to many chances to stay in the game. LCC was able to escape with the win due largely to the exceptional play of Tom Riis and Bryan Cooper. Tom Riis, a senior captain, was 7 of 12 on face offs, had a game high 5 ground balls, and scored 2 goals. Bryan Cooper, a junior goalie, had 14 saves in the 6-5 win. Great win for LCC against a tough opponent!

The defensive midfield group of Matt Melzer, Brent Melbye, and Jared Maffucci were huge in the win. La Costa travels to Poway this Friday for another early season, non-league test.
