Congratulations on an impressive 2016 season!

Posted by Jesse Foss at May 26, 2016 12:03PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Congratulations to the 2016 La Costa Canyon Mavericks on another outstanding season! The Mavericks finished with a record of 15-7 and an Avocado League Title while playing the #3 SOS in the West and #1 SOS in San Diego. LCC finished the season ranked #3 in San Diego, #8 in California, and #10 in the West according to Laxpower. The Mavericks also appeared in their 15 straight CIF Semifinal and won their 13th straight League Title (6 times Co-Champion).

Thank you to our 12 seniors – Michael Rice, Connor Rafferty, Jake McLean, Jack Kagan, Davis Vigil, Garrett DeLeon, Patrick Dahl, Connor Brown, Crew Taylor, Tak Inoue, Daniel Verga, and Pierce Mazcko. It was an outstanding senior class that has left the program in a great place. I expect that the returning Mavericks will be ready to work hard in 2017 and continue the excellence of the classes before them.

This season we had several players selected to the Avocado All-League teams. Congrats to the players that were recognized for their outstanding play.

Crew Taylor – League Player of the Year, 1st Team All-League – No player meant more to the Mavericks than Crew. Whether it was shutting down our opponents #1 offensive player, taking a face off when needed, or rallying the team before a game. Finished second in Caused TO’s (34), second in GB’s (72), and added 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist).
Jake McLean – 1st Team All- League – One of the fiercest competitors we have had in our program. Jake is a do-it-all two way midfielder for us and a scoring threat from anywhere inside the box. Led the team in goals (46), second in points (63), and third in assists (17).
Jack Keen – 1st Team All-League – A left handed attack man that really stepped up his game in his second year starting. Not only led the team in points but shot the ball at an outstanding 50%! He is be once again be one of our offensive leaders in 2017. Led the team in points (64), second in goals (44), second in assists (20)
Pierce Mazcko – 1st Team All-League – A defensive players but equally skilled on the offensive side of the ball. Pierce had several highlight reel plays on both sides of the ball. Led the team in Caused TO’s (48), third in GB’s (65), and 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists)
Andrew Beacham – 2nd Team All-League – One of the most skilled players we have had in the program with the opportunity to become one of the best. Put up big numbers and had some huge games in 2016. I expect him to be a team leader on & off the field in 2017. Led the team in assists (21), third in points (50), and third in goals (29)
Parker MacLean – 2nd Team All-League – A relentless player with the attitude and effort that sets him apart. Parker was the team’s Swiss army knife playing offense, defense, man down, man up, took face offs, and played wings on face offs. Finished the season with 25 points (15 goals, 10 assist) along with 45 GB’s
Kyle Haggerty – 2nd Team All-League – The team “most improved player” in 2016. Kyle proved himself to be a dominant close defense man after earning a starting spot and never giving it up. He will be the backbone of the defense in 2017. Finished third in Caused TO’s (30), scooped up 30 GB’s, and had 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist)
Ryan Winn – Honorable Mention All-League – Ryan has worked very hard and battled through adversity to become the starting goal tender for the Mavericks. He had an impressive season and had some highlight reel saves to help us to a 15-7 record. Finished with a 54% SAA overall and 64% SAA in league
Isaac Smith – Honorable Mention All-League – The teams lone face off player and took more face offs than any player in LCC history! He will now move into sole possession of “most face offs won in a season” in the LCC record book with 263 wins. Took 427 draws and won 263 for a 62% average overall and was 74% in league

GO MAVS!

WEST TOP 10

1. Monte Vista-Danville (Calif.), 11-0

While the other top teams in the state are beating each other up, the Mustangs remain unscathed. They added an 18-5 win over Stevenson School (Calif.) on April 6. Wiley Bonham led the way with eight points on four goals and four assists. Previous ranking: 3

2. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 11-3

The Knights made a big jump this week thanks to a 6-4 win over former No. 1 St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) on April 8, which followed a pair of losses to then-nationally ranked Bergen Catholic (N.J.) and a 9-3 Mount St. Joseph (Md.) team. Ellis Geis (two goals, one takeaway), Miles Smart (5-for-9 on faceoffs) and Ryan Blank (13 saves) led Foothill in the win over the Wildcats. Previous ranking: 8

3. St. Ignatius (Calif.), 9-4

It’s been a season of ups and downs for the Wildcats, who came off an upset win over nationally-ranked Chaminade (N.Y.) to beat West No. 4 La Costa Canyon (Calif.) 6-5 on April 5 before dropping a 6-4 decision to No. 8 Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) on Friday. Bryn Evans scored the game-winner against Canyon with 28.5 seconds left. Both of SI’s in-state losses were decided by three goals or less. Previous ranking: 1

4. La Costa Canyon (Calif.), 9-3

The Mavericks knotted the game with St. Ignatius with 57.7 seconds left but couldn’t prevent the Wildcats’ answer and lost its third one-goal margin game. Canyon had picked up notable wins over Regis Jesuit (Colo.) and then-nationally ranked Bergen Catholic (N.J.) the week prior. The Mavericks meet Torrey Pines (Calif.) April 15. Previous ranking: 4

5. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 5-1

The Raiders bounced back from their loss to La Costa Canyon with a 7-4 win over Arapahoe (Colo.) and 14-10 win over St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.). A rematch of last year’s Class 5A championship loss to Cherry Creek looms April 14. Previous ranking: 5

6. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 9-1

A shakeup at the top of the rankings was the only reason the Falcons didn’t climb. They used the momentum from their overtime win over Corona del Mar to hand Colorado defending Class 5A state champion Cherry Creek a 15-11 loss. Torrey Pines, led by midfielder Ara Suhadolnik’s three goals and two assists, took a 7-1 lead in the first quarter and never again had less than a four-goal cushion. Previous ranking: 6

7. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 4-1

The loss to Torrey Pines wasn’t a bad loss, but based on results around the region, it cost the Bruins’ their spot in the top 5. Nate Miller scored four goals, and Asher Nolting had three, but Cherry Creek led only briefly before the Falcons pulled away in the first quarter. The Bruins’ next big test is against Regis Jesuit – which beat Torrey Pines 10-7 on March 30. Previous ranking: 2

8. Corona del Mar (Calif.), 10-1

Coming off an overtime loss to Torrey Pines, the Sea Kings responded by winning three games against Arizona teams in three consecutive days last week. That included a 13-2 rout of the defending Division I state champion Desert Vista. Corona del Mar faces 7-2 Tesoro (Calif.) on Tuesday. Previous ranking: 7

9. Mountain Vista (Colo.), 5-0

The Golden Eagles outscored their two opponents last week 36-9, including an 18-4 win over Kent Denver in which Jake Frane tallied seven goals. A matchup with Cherry Creek looms April 18, following two games this week. Previous ranking: 9

10. Mercer Island (Wash.), 6-0

The Islanders beat Skyline (Wash.) 9-7 in their closest game this season on April 8, and they face three big tests in Massachusetts this week. Mercer Island will play 2015 Division I finalists Duxbury (runner-up) and Lincoln-Sudbury (champion) before meeting Division II champion Medfield on April 15. Previous ranking: 10

LCC announces 2016 Varsity Schedule

Posted by La Costa Canyon Mavericks at Nov 29, 2015 6:55PM PST

The LCC men’s lacrosse team has announced their 2016 spring schedule. The Mavericks are coming off a 14-9 record and a CIF-San Diego Division 1 Championship. LCC returns the majority of their team from a year ago. Those players, now juniors and seniors, are battle tested and ready to make their mark on the strong tradition of LCC lacrosse. Returning senior standouts include Jake McLean, Michael Rice, and Jack Kagan which will lead an explosive offense. The defense will feature seniors and returning starters in Pierce Maczko, Crew Taylor, and Daniel Verga.

2016 will feature several new opponents to this year’s schedule including Woodlands and St. Marks from Texas. Woodlands finished 2015 with a 17-3 record and the runner-up in the Texas state championship. The schedule also features Northern California powers; St. Ignatius and Bellarmine Prep. St. Ignatius is coming off the best season ever by a west coast school. In 2015, the Wildcats finished with an 18-1 record and #5 in the nation. The Mavericks haven’t played St. Ignatius since 2010 and the series is tied at 2-2 since first playing in 2004. Regis Jesuit and Wheat Ridge are strong programs from Colorado that continue to stay on the schedule. Regis Jesuit finished 2015 with a 16-3 record and the runner-up in the Colorado state championship.

The schedule is also highlighted by the top three Orange County/Los Angeles teams from 2015. Foothill-Santa Ana, St. Margaret’s Episcopal, and Corona Del Mar went a combined a 59-6 and were the #2, #3, and #4 ranked teams in California. The regular season will also feature the top programs in San Diego. Cathedral Catholic, the Bishop’s School, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Torrey Pines, and Coronado will all pose great challenges and be a preview to the possible CIF-San Diego playoff picture.

The season begins on Wednesday, March 9th at LCC against Carlsbad High School. The Varsity schedule is available on www.lccmenslacrosse.com under documents.

Go Mavs!

EL CAJON — Apparently even a down year ends with a championship trophy for the La Costa Canyon boys lacrosse program.

The third-seeded Mavericks used stingy defense to beat No. 4 Bishop’s 5-2 in the section Division I final Saturday at Granite Hills High, extending their own record with a seventh section title and putting a rough regular season — by their lofty standards — behind them.

“Things didn’t really go how we wanted in the regular season,” coach Jesse Foss said of La Costa Canyon’s 11-9 record against an extremely tough schedule. “The kids had a chance to fold it up and pack it in, and they didn’t. They handled themselves like men.”
Jack Kagan and Jack McKeon each scored twice to lead La Costa Canyon (14-9) offensively.

But it was the Mavericks defense that played huge, with seven saves from senior goalkeeper Ben Fredricks, who came back strong this season after a freshman beat him out for a starting position last year.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way this team finished the season,” Fredricks said. “Everyone stepped up to finish strong.”
