The Mavericks (4-0) took down Poway (1-3) in a cross-league match up on Friday night. LCC got off to a fast start scoring early and finishing the first half with an 8-2 lead. In the second half, Poway fought hard to get back in the game and outscored the Mavericks 2-1 in the third quarter. La Costa Canyon was able to hold on to the lead and the win, 10-5. The Maverick’s offense saw 8 different scorers find the net and 8 of the 10 goals were assisted. The Maverick’s defense allowed only 10 shots on goal, caused 22 turnovers, and held the Poway to 0-5 on man-up. Brendan Gaughan and Cameron Ziegler led all scorers with 4 points (2 goals/2assists) each. Tom Riis was huge again going 6 of 9 for 67% on face offs, scooping up 4 ground balls, and adding 2 points (1 goal/1 assist). Defensively, Cole Tudor did a little of everything for the Mavericks. He was 4 of 6 for 66% on face offs, played stellar defense, and scored a huge goal early in the game. This was a solid team win for the Mavericks against a strong Division 1 opponent. The Mavericks are back in action at home this Tuesday against Coronado. The game is set for 730pm. GO MAVS!
