La Costa Canyon (2-0) used a balanced offense and a solid defense to win Friday night’s game against league opponent, San Marcos (1-2). The Maverick’s offense was well executed as it built an 8-2 lead at half time. The game was hard fought by both teams and San Marcos continued to fight the entire game. In the end, LCC was too much for the knights and won by a final score of 15-6. The game saw 9 different scorers find the back of the net and 10 of the 15 goals were assisted. Defensively, we had 22 caused turnovers and were 14 of 15 in clears. Ground balls were a huge factor in the time of possession and pace of the game as LCC held a 40-22 advantage in ground balls. Aaron Loy was 5-11 shooting for a career high 5 goals and scooped up 5 ground balls. Tom Riis continued to excel at the face off X going 12-16 for 75%. He also scooped up a game high 7 ground balls and scored 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist). Aiden Moran was solid on defense causing 4 turnovers, having an assist, and putting down vicious hits all game. It was a nice win against a steadily improving San Marcos team. On Tuesday, March 13th we will be traveling to play “preseason #1” Cathedral Catholic. The game starts at 7pm and should be a great early season test for the boys!

The mavericks (1-0) began their 2012 season last night with a 12-1 win over league opponent Carlsbad (0-1). La Costa got off to a good start outscoring Carlsbad 3-1 in the first quarter. After the Carlsbad goal, the mavericks reeled off 9 straight unanswered goals. LCC saw 8 different scorers find the back of the net in the game with 10 of their 12 goals being assisted. Brendan Gaughan (1 goal, 3 assists) and Aaron Loy (2 goals, 2 assists) led the team with 4 points each. Dillon Flood and Jared Maffucci also added a pair of goals each. On the defensive side of the ball, Aiden Moran, Kyle Mummau, and Cole Tudor were a disrupting factor all night. The group had a combined 20 caused takeaways against the Carlsbad offense. One of the biggest factors was the 32 to 17 advantage LCC had in ground balls. Brent Melbye collected a team high 5 ground balls in the game. The game was a great start to the seaosn. The maverick’s next game is at LCC this Friday at 7pm against league opponent San Marcos (1-1). This should be another great test for the boys!

The West region could be the region where lacrosse is expanding the most. For instance, when Mercer Island (Wash.) defeated Massachusetts powerhouse Duxbury (Mass.) last season, POWERADE FAB 50 voters took notice.

With several games pitting teams from the west against the more traditional hotbed areas of New York and Maryland, the chances for even more teams from this region to be ranked in 2012 could be increased.

Overall, 10 players in the ESPNHS 100 and five from the ESPNHS Top 50 juniors are from the West, and that number barely scratches the surface of the overall Division-I talent in the region.

The Starting Lineup
